DERMATOLOGY SERVICES: Laser Hair Removal
Laser Hair RemovalIn our society, the presence or lack of body hair holds great cultural significance. Unwanted body hair and the efforts to remove it can be a source of great distress for women and men. Until the mid 1990's, the only permanent method of hair removal was electrolysis. Since the mid 1990's, laser hair removal has become one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures. |

To be evaluated for laser hair removal, a test spot is performed to inconspicuous areas of the body to test for possible side effects. These are evaluated at two weeks for pigment changes. Side effects of laser hair removal include blistering, hypo pigmentation (lightening of the skin), or hyper pigmentation (darkening of the skin), burns and in some cases scarring. Patients should expect anywhere from 50% to 90% reduction in terminal (active) hair growth after a series of four to six treatments. The hairs that do grow back will be smaller, lighter, and less noticeable. Maintenance treatments may be needed in the future. Patients need to wear sunscreen starting at six weeks prior to the first treatment to minimize the risk of complications from the increase in skin pigment from tanning the skin. Tanning beds should also be avoided if using lasers. Treatment sites should be shaved prior to each treatment, and the area treated should be cooled before and after treatment, particularly in dark-skinned patients. Ice, refrigerated gels, or cooling sprays can be used. The options for hair removal are safe and effective. |
